Hagia Sophia Aya Sofya Livecam Italians79 in Istanbul

Hagia Sophia (from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Aya Sofya) is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its dedication in 360 until 1453, it served as the cathedral of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople of the Western Crusader established Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1934, when it was secularized. It was opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.[1] The Church was dedicated to the Logos, the second person of the Holy Trinity,[2] its dedication feast taking place on December 25, the anniversary of the incarnation of the Logos in Christ.[2] Although it is sometimes referred to as Sancta Sophia (as though it were named after Saint Sophia), sophia is the phonetic spelling in Latin of the Greek word for wisdom - the full name in Greek being Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας, "Church of the Holy Wisdom of God".[3][4] Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have "changed the history of architecture."[5] It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian and ...

ST SOPHIA AGIA SOPHIA - ISTANBUL CHURCHES

St. Sophia - Chora church- St. Mary Diakonissa ******************************************************** H Agia Sophia or Saint Sophia. The Greek name in full is *Ναός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας* Church of the Holy Wisdom of God, it was dedicated to the Holy Wisdom of God rather than a specific saint named Sophia. It is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. Of great artistic value was its decorated interior with mosaics and marble pillars and coverings. The temple itself was so richly and artistically decorated that Justinian proclaimed, "Solomon, I have outdone thee!" *Νενίκηκά σε Σολομών*. Justinian himself had overseen the completion of the greatest cathedral ever built up to that time, and it was to remain the largest cathedral for 1000 years. It is an enormous and magnificent structure with an extremely large dome which dominates the exterior of the building. The Architectural style of this Byzantine Temple is domed basilica. Its architects were Anthemius from Tralles and Isidorus from Miletus. In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and Sultan Mehmed II ordered the Chrisian Temple to be converted into a mosque. The bells, altar, iconostasis, and sacrificial vessels were destroyed, and many of the Mosaics were eventually plastered over. The Islamic Features such as the mihrab, the minbar, and the four Minarets outside were added over the course of its history under the Ottomans. For almost 500 years the principal mosque of ...

Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul Turkey 2006. Hagia Sophia (Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία; "Holy Wisdom", Turkish: Ayasofya) is a former patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, now a museum, in Istanbul, Turkey. Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture. It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until the completion of the Medieval Seville Cathedral in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, and was in fact the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site (the previous two had both been destroyed by riots). It was designed by two architects, Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. The Church contained a large collection of holy relics and featured, among other things, a 50 ft (15 m) silver iconostasis. It was the patriarchal church of the Patriarch of Constantinople and the religious focus point of the Eastern Orthodox Church for nearly 1000 years.

Hagia Sophia .wmv

The video is a bit long and i arranged it so slow in order to emphasize the mood of the song. And this song was about 8 minutes and i didnt want to cut the music in the middle. The music belongs to Tuluyhan Uğurlu, a great artist, a Turkish composer. And all the photos belong to me, Emre Ucar.
