Entry from: Athens, Greece Entry Title: "Easter at the Acropolis" Entry: "Well, I guess it is about time I put up my travel details on my Greece trip. Considering I slacked off writing this when I got right back from my trip, I have pretty much forgotten everything... Just Kidding. The day I got back from Istanbul, I came back to my apartment in Cyprus, unpacked and repacked and left the next morning at 5 am to get on the bus to go to the airport! (run-on sentence here was Just completely necessary to give you the "out of breath" feeling) We got on the plane around nine in the morning and took off to Athens, Greece. NOTE ON THE AIRPLANE: Aegean Airlines has been the best airline I have flown on out here. The planes are clean and roomy. All of the seats are comfortable with a good amount of leg-room *unlike some airlines I fly on...Airtran* The best part of all though is that they feed you. Ladies and gentlemen I am talking "food Food". Not the Delta peanuts or the Airtran pretzels; no no no! We get a full meal. I have eaten better on the Aegean planes than I do at my apartment. Here is the list of food, in no particular order that I have eaten during one of the flights: 1. lasagna, whole wheat rolls, cucumber/tomato salad, and chocolate cake 2. yogurt, scrambled eggs, toast and jam 3. turkey and ...

"The home of the Gods" Markandstacy's photos around Athens, Greece (going from metoera to bari)
Preview of Markandstacy's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Athens, Greece Entry Title: "The home of the Gods..." Entry: "Travelling Greece is venturing into History itself. From the ancient past to the present, civilization has evolved upon the fertile lands of the Aegean coast. Minoans, Mycaeneans, Ionians, Dorians, Macedonians... Ancient Hellenic City states and kingdoms have colored so much of ancient history with their powerful military and commercial prowess and domination. Thus to know anything of Medicine, Philosophy, Politics, Architecture, or Science is to know something of Greece. Greece is a place where 3000 year old ruins co-exist with bustling modern cities and towns. It is the home to a beautiful people with a proud culture and strong identity rooted in their rich past and unique cultural traditions. A people who are ever happy to share their deep, sincere hospitality with the rest of the world as honoured guests in this cradle of Western Civilization... It began with a marathon ferry journey from the Croatian island of Korcula to Greece that took 2 full days and nights. An overnight ferry from Korcula to Bari, Italy; a day in Bari; and then another overnight from Bari to Igoumenitsa that found us half asleep and wandering a new city and country at 4:00 am! As seasoned ferry veterans by this time, we did manage to find a semi ...

"Chora, the Capital of Skyros" Greekcypriot's photos around SKYROS , Greece (travel pics)
Preview of Greekcypriot's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: SKYROS , Greece Entry Title: "Chora, the Capital of Skyros" Entry: "I LOVE THE CAPITAL OF SKYROS!!! We come to the capital of Skyros called Chora. I can't wait to walk through its maze of steep and narrow streets where no cars can pass. Cars can reach as far as the central square, and from this point on, the road leads to the narrow lanes and the capital's neighbourhoods. Parking is a problem but we are lucky to park our car not very far from the taxi square. The capital lies on the east side of the narrow waist of Skyros that divides the island to the north and south. On top of the hill it is the Castle, - a Byzantine fortress with some Venetian trimmings built over an ancient acropolis. Just below the castle it is a very old monastery but it is kept locked after the earthquake. The view from up here is breathtaking! The Cycladic-style cube houses stacked on top of each other to the summit of the hill give some panoramic views from the round area. In the very centre of the capital and through the main street there are many nice restaurants, cafĂ© bars, souvenir shops that lead to an open square overlooking the sea. I come to the other end and the view is fantastic! It is the long beach of Molos and Magazia and it is just 5 steps from here to get to the two Museums of the island. I am ...

"Rossos in Knossos" Technotrekker's photos around Iraklio (Crete), Greece (greek waves knossos)
Preview of Technotrekker's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Iraklio (Crete), Greece Entry Title: "Rossos in Knossos" Entry: "I was up long before the sparrows to catch this one - the SS Ierapetra from Rodos to Criti - finding once again that a 4.30am departure always puts you on an odd footing for the rest of the day, especially when bouzouki Mike has been strumming and wailing all night. Still, I made it aboard and promptly fell asleep on the floor so maybe his caterwauling was a blessing in disguise. With the sun shining late the next morning I had a chance to see a string of small Greek isles on the remainder of the twelve hour voyage to Crete. Most seemed quite barren and unpromising but many had quaint little villages around a small port so we diligently stopped at each one to let passengers on and off. It's quite an ingenious system this network of island ferries. The boats have been large and modern so far and all have run like to clockwork (although I hear this isn't always the case in peak season). It's a little pricey, but a very pleasant and efficient way to get around. As Crete hove into view I was on deck scoping out the safety gear, making a mental note to locate the metal 'fire plan' club before departure on the next ferry in case of fire. I don't know what it really is or how it is used but I'll get some respect wielding that ...

"The most beautiful place we've seen" Gregdani09's photos around Santorini, Greece (alkyona oia)
Preview of Gregdani09'sblog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Santorini, Greece Entry Title: "The most beautiful place we've seen" Entry: "We arrived in Santorini at noon and it took another hour and a half and two bus rides to get to our destination - the village of Oia (pronounced ee-ah). But is well worth the wait. This is the most beautiful place we have visited, not just on this trip, but ever. The architecture, the quaint streets, the blue water, the white-washed homes...we love it all! First, the place we rented was incredible and is everything you would expect from a Greek island villa. Just check out the pics from our balcony. After settling in, we walked the narrow streets and went down 214 steps to the seaside. We jumped into the Aegean Sea, surrounded by Europeans - complete with Speedos and bare chests (even the females). We met some very nice Americans from San Francisco, chatted with them for a while and then hung out at a local taverna right on the water. Greg had his new favorite beer Mythos and Danielle had white wine. Something cool about all the tavernas here in Greece: they always give you some sort of snack with your drinks. We like that. We then headed back to the villa, enjoyed our patio view for a bit then went out to dinner. Although the place we ate had gorgeous sunset views, it was severely overpriced for some lackluster ...

"Olympia and the End of an Era" Zimmerms's photos around Athens, Greece (study abroad athens)
Preview of Zimmerms's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Athens, Greece Entry Title: "Olympia and the End of an Era" Entry: "That's all she wrote, folks. My trip around the Peloponnese is all over. And Attica welcomed me warmly. After being off the bus for 30 seconds, I got some pollution in my eye. Ah, Athens, I love you, too! It's really nice to be back, but I'll definitely miss the beauty and serenity that the Peloponnese had to offer. I've come back from a land of beautiful green foliage and polychromic flowers to a land of cold hard steel and concrete... Both have their peculiar charms, and I'm beyond excited to get some Grill and Pita tonight, but... still... It's the Peloponnese. You've got to miss it. I apologize for not truly updating the last two evenings. The internet at my hotel in Pylos and my hotel in Olympia was something to shake a stick at, to use a cliche inversely. It would cut out more regularly than it would provide internet, so I didn't bother getting on the internet for long. In the time that I did have, I uploaded pictures to Facebook. Shortly thereafter each night, the internet became wholly unusable, so my travel blog suffered. But I'm back in beautiful Athens, now, which means I have something like internet again, although my apartment is perhaps the only one without its own router now... But we'll just forget about ...

"Sailing in the Greek Islands - May 2006" The_mcdonoughs's photos around Athens, Greece

Entry from: Athens, Greece Entry Title: "Sailing in the Greek Islands - May 2006" Entry: "In May we ticked off one of Meghan's dream vacations - sailing in the Greek isles. Meghan and 2 friends from the American Women's Club planned the trip for 3 couples. We would fly into Athens with our friends Tracy and Jill Hermann and Greg and Tara Brown, spend a day and a night in the city, and then fly to one of the central islands in the Cyclades chain and meet our skipper and yacht. The 6 of us arrived in Athens late on Friday night, arrived in the hotel around 1am and hit the sack. The next day we set out to see the Acropolis, which is the main sight to see in Athens. It was sunny and warm - likely 22 (low 70s) - a welcome change from the cool Amsterdam spring. The city reminded Meghan and I of Istanbul - very hilly with similar architecture and feel. Don't tell the Greeks, as they are ancient enemies. The Acropolis is fantastic and definitely exceeded our expectations. To think that Athens was a vibrant city 2500 years ago is mind-boggling. I still remember a bit of the old high school Latin, which is helpful at times like this. Sunday morning we flew to Paros to meet the boat. The skipper had a hard sail the night before to get the boat there, so we set up shop in town and chatted with some of the ...

"Supermarkets and Traffic Lights Yay" Jhdavis's photos around Thessaloniki, Greece
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Thessaloniki, Greece by TravelPod blogger Jhdavis titled "Supermarkets and Traffic Lights Yay!" Jhdavis's travel blog entry: "Jared: So, after a nice long rest we began day two and although the weather seemed forbidding at the start, it cleared up into a light drizzle and plenty of sunshine. We discovered a pizza chain, navigated through a supermarket, and went out on the town for a girl's birthday at the end of the night. But first Megan started off by going on a sightseeing trip with her new roomie, Allie. Megan: Jared would have come on this amazing adventure, but since we don't have cell phones that work here and I didn't even know where his building was, there was no way for us to meet up. After attempting to find his apartment with no success, I decided to explore the neighborhood with my roommate, a friend of hers from school, and a study abroad student who can speak and understand Greek (he is very helpful in this city). We started our journey by crossing the street where street lights do not exist and walked a little further until we found our first ruin in the middle of a sidewalk; a large archway with images carved into it. Across the street was a row of apartment building with stores and food shops underneath that leads straight to the bay. There are many old churches around here too, so we stopped along the way to take pictures and admire the architecture. Demetri, the student who understands Greek, lead us ...

"Historic Savannah" Cobra1899's photos around Savannah, United States
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Savannah, United States by TravelPod blogger Cobra1899 titled "Historic Savannah!" Cobra1899's travel blog entry: ""Savannah, Georgia. Established in 1733 to become a bustling port for exporting cotton and a city of culture whose architecture blended a variety of styles...Federal, English Regency, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Romanesque Revival and Queen Anne. During the Civil War, Savannah was the prize at the end of the Union Army's devastating "March to the Sea" in December 1864 - but was spared by General William Tecumseh Sherman, who made her a "Christmas gift" to President Abraham Lincoln." I walked for 7 hours through Savannah's cobblestoned streets, lush city squares and quaint waterfront. I meandered aimlessly...north....west...south....and east...going round in circles...up and down the streets, and back again. Savannah is a walking city set up in a grid fashion. Very easy to get around and not get lost. There are no streets that take off in crazy angles where you end up not knowing which direction you are heading. When I started getting tired I would tell myself that that was it...no more pictures and time to head back. Then I would see something else. This happened over and over again. I had decided early on to stick around until it got dark, though I was tired and almost left. If I had had any energy left I would have walked the Historic section one more time in the dark. It is the Christmas ...
