Types of Greek Food and Wine

One of the main beauties of the world is how different we are to one another. We each have our own nationality, language, culture heritage and foods music and customs which are instantly recognizable. Within Greece, food and wine is a much loved part of life which derives from the ancient times and family customs. However, in the beginnings, food was not just simply enjoyed to survive and satisfy ourselves. During Ancient Greece, food was often sacrificed to the Gods before consumed and on other occasions, some foods were even shunned if it was believed that the Gods did not like them. Nowadays, many of us are aware of the different traditional foods which are enjoyed by the Greeks due to tourism and trends in eclectic foods. However, if you are interested in learning more about the types of wine and wine enjoyed by the Greeks, below is a list of some of the delights you can hope to find.

A vast majority of Greek foods incorporate vital ingredients such as olive oil, meats such as lamb, and vegetables. However, Greek cuisine is renowned for being flavorsome and fresh, incorporating a wide range of spices, meats and vegetables. Similar to some other cultures, the Greeks believed that food can help some common ailments, such as Avgolemono which is a soup made from chicken broth, lemon juice eggs and rice. This is a common food enjoyed within Greece in when recovering from common colds or when trying to stave off illness. Desserts are a popular course with many in Greece and Loukoumades is a main ingredient within many sweets dishes. Loukoumades is a type of Greek pastry which is made from a mixture of yeast, sugar, eggs, flour and nutmeg and is often garnished with honey, sugar and cinnamon. Filo pastry is also popular using the infamous Baklava dessert which is native to Greece.

One of Greece's most popular and well known dishes is Moussaka. Moussaka is similar to a casserole and combines eggplant, potatoes, red wine and onions although it is not uncommon for some form of meat to be used within the recipe also. Meat is incorporated into many main Greek meals and dishes such as Souvlaki, which is similar to a skewered kebab, are favored by many Greek tourists. Vegetables are also thoroughly loved by the Greeks and so plenty of fresh, seasonal vegetables are incorporated into meals as often as possible either as a side dish or as part of the main meal. Greek salads, or Horiatiki, are also popular as a side dish with most main meals. Typically, we associate salads to include some form of lettuce with a variety of salad vegetables and dressing. Greek salad is different in that it is primarily made up of vegetables such as tomato, cucumber, onions, feta cheese and olive oil and seasoning. Traditionally, lettuce is rarely used within Greek salads. In additional to salads, pita bread is a common side dish with main meals with an array of dips available such as yoghurt, garlic and cucumber.

Along with food, wine is thoroughly enjoyed by the Greeks and has been since Ancient Greece where it was recognized as the drink of the Gods. Within Greece there are over 300 different blends of Greek wine from red, white and blanc de gris varieties which are loved by locals and tourists alike. One of the most popular wines within Greece is the Retsina which is a white or rose wine. Although favored by many Greeks, it is less popular with tourists due to the resin mixed in which gives it a distinct taste. Red is a popular wine in Greece, in particular Brusco, or dry red house wine and Xinomavro, or acid black wine, which is a deep red wine produced in the northern part of Greece. This is a popular wine as it ages well and provides a rich, woody flavor and aroma. One of the most popular red wines within the island is Agiorghitiko which is named after St. George. The Agiorghitiko grape grows in the Peloponnese area and possesses a cherry flavor with a slight hint of spice.

There is no denying that when it comes to being passionate about food and wine, the Greeks are some of the best. Boasting a flavorsome, delicious buffet of cuisine which is rich in culture and history, a trip to Greece is guaranteed to not only have you in awe of the history and culture you can experience in terms of its architecture, etc but also in terms of the exquisite food you will be introduced to.

Federal Architecture's Lasting Appeal

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Federal architecture is one of the most easily recognizable building styles in the eastern United States. Many of the nation's most famous buildings are done in this style, as are a large percentage of houses along the Eastern Seaboard. With its emphasis on symmetry and classic decorative features Federal architecture also evokes a variety of similar styles such as Neo-classical and Greek Revival.

Owning a Federal-style home usually means owning a piece of U.S. history. Many homes in this style were built during the post-revolutionary era between the late 1700s and the 1830s, while the nation was shaping its identity. It's a testament to the architectural soundness and building quality of the time that many of these buildings are still still occupied and in fine condition. Cities with large original Federal-home collections include Annapolis, Maryland, Savannah, Georgia, Castine, Maine, and Salem, Massachusetts. New England port cities, in particular, tend to have the highest percentage of Federal-style homes. Population booms after the revolutionary war helped produce many of the old Federal homes, while long periods of slow development helped extend their lives until they became recognized and protected for their classic appeal.

This is characterized by its spacious, rectangular designs, and simplicity. The style calls for symmetry, and homes built in the style are usually identical on either side of the central doorway. Even Federal row houses, common in cities like Philadelphia and Boston, come close to achieving complete symmetry, and sometimes even function with a central doorway for all residences. Unlike many modern-styled homes, Federal homes usually include a full second floor, and sometimes a third story attic. Roofs on federal homes are sometimes shielded by a balustrade, and are often hipped, with slopes on all four sides. Facades and outer walls are generally flat, broken only by porches or pillared entrances, and windows usually have small panes, due to the high cost of making large sheets of glass at the time - windows on these homes are also commonly equipped with shutters.

Patriotism also played a role in the development of it. Homes built in this style were among the first to feature the American eagle motif, and helped popularize it throughout the nation. As well, similarities in Federal architecture to Greek and Roman building styles, like the more bold Neo-Classical style, represented a conscious effort by Americans to link their new nation with the great democracies of the past.

Federal architecture was the first of many great building styles developed in the U.S., and it remains one of the most distinct and popular.

Learn Greek in Rapid Time

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Is there a reason for you to learn Greek if you're not a scholar who was tasked to study contemporary Greek literature or if you are not married to a Greek Adonis? You would surely be surprised to find the most wonderful reasons for learning Greek.

First off, learning a second language is necessary for those who would like to spend their valuable time doing something useful rather than watching canned soap operas on TV. The best thing about choosing to learn Greek is that you are studying a language that is close to Latin yet still alive, changing, and being used. In fact, the Greek language has so much influence to many languages that are considered lingua franca. For modern English per se, you have the words democracy, mathematics, Theospian, philosophy, and many more. These words have conquered the modern world first through Latin then French which are both strongly influenced by the Greek language. It is also said that the Greek language is the most documented language in whole world, for a span of three thousand years. The modern Greek language comes from the Byzantine period during the 11th century. It is a language that has many inflections and articles and verbs that conjugate. As a matter of fact, some say it is close to the English language structure.

It is said that Greek is spoken by about 12 million people who come from several countries such as Romania, Russia, Canada, Cyprus, Bulgaria, and even the United States. That only means that if you know the Greek language it would be easier for you to find opportunities in these countries as well.

Greece is a favorite travel spot for many people. We owe it to its rich history, heritage, and culture. One doesn't have to be a scholar or a historian if only to enjoy the ancient architecture that is still part of the thriving culture in Crete, Athens, and the many historical places in Greece. Now there is a great reason for you to learn the language, travel and while you're at it, you can as well read its rich body of literature.

The Greek language also has great use even at home. When you are familiar with the Greek words, you would not find it difficult to understand scientific names as most of them have semblance to Greek words. In fact that is one of the reasons why people say it is one of the most difficult languages to learn. However, if you look at it, many people can actually breeze through learning the language as Latin words are part and parcel of almost any language in the modern world. Lawyers and law students would find it easy to learn the language as compared to reading their court rulings, pleadings, and court cases that are all laced with Latin and Spanish.

One good thing about learning the Greek language is that you won't have to find a language trainer for it. You can just listen on your iPod Pimsleur's Greek language learning audio and you surely will learn the language gradually yet tightly. The best thing is, you can do it while walking your dog to the park.

For those who thirst for the real thing, here is the complete list of all your favorite Greek language learning audio courses: Greek foreign language learning

Cheaper Greek Island Holidays

With Christmas and New Year out of the way and the UK being hit by really bad winter weather, we are all getting ready for our summer 2010 holiday. Where to go, where to go? where to go? Well, I am thinking you can't go wrong with booking a nice cheap holiday to one of the Greek Islands. Greece has some beautiful islands to pick from, but I am swaying with the idea of stunning Corfu.

There is so much to do on the island of Corfu including fabulous architecture, inspirational history and stunning scenery. Some of the top attractions of Corfu include the Taverva White house, which over looks Kalami Bay, this is where the famous Durrell family lived with their family and resided here for four years and after this period remained in Greece for many years. The brothers were inspired to create some of their greatest work here in Corfu and the Durrell School of Corfu in Corfu Town was created in their honour. The school is located in Corfu Town and can be visited by all. The Angelokastro is another must see. It is one of the greatest and most important Byzantine castles of Greece. It is located at the top of the highest peak of the island's coastline on the north west of the island near to Palaiokastritsa. When you arrive at the top you will encounter some amazing views of the surrounding area.

I have researched Corfu quite a lot and I don't think you will be disappointed with the beaches Corfu has to offer. Corfu's beaches are mostly sandy and have fabulous, safe, blue Mediterranean seas to bathe in. You will find beaches of all sizes from the large touristy beaches to the small secluded coves with no-one on them.

I'm thinking that hiring car on the island is going to be the best way to explore the island. With friends and colleagues recommending car hire and travelling everywhere on the island, this has got to be a cheaper and more exciting way of spending the duration of your holiday. Corfu is not a very big island and I think you will get to see most attractions with in your duration here.

Corfu holidays are there to have and you will probably find, as I have, Corfu is one of the cheaper islands to travel to and in the current world economical situation this could be the answer to our summer holidays 2010 on a budget.

City of Bath, John Wood architecture

In the 18th century the Georgian style was introduced in Bath by architect John Wood sr. Queen Square was the first design in which classical elements were reused in the construction. John Woods second prestigious project was the construction of The Circus, originally named Kings Circus. This is John Woods masterwork in Bath. Building commenced in 1754. Unfortunately he died that same year and never saw the wonderful building completed. But fortunately he had a son, also named John Wood. He completed his fathers design four years later. The Circus was Englands first amphitheatre, and the Woods were undoubtedly inspired by the Colosseum in Rome. Just a house is not enough, the original Georgian Garden has the same dimensional stability as the houses, austere shapes and gravel in the middle, certainly no grass. Everything was built according to the masters design. After the Circus, John Wood jr built the Royal Crescent. It took seven years. John junior was probably influenced by the history of the Celtic druids who had a sickle-shaped temple of the moon in the area. He may have also been inspired by the existing landscape back then. Others insist he was paying homage to his father, in any case it was Englands first crescent with building elements from the ancient Greek and Roman style. Most servants did not get past the kitchen, serving your master was the rule. The kitchen had modern gadgets like an automatic grill.

Design History of the Metal Bench

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Among the oldest forms of architecture and décor are those that involve metalwork. Metal furniture has been the preoccupation of designers and fashion moguls of some of the most antiquated civilizations such as the Greek, the Roman and the Middle Eastern ones. This mean that benches are an old type piece of furniture, yet the metal bench became popular only in the 20th century.

The metal bench was initially an urban, public piece but with the evolution of home décor, it became the in thing to have a bench for outdoor uses mostly in home gardens. The era of Victorian style décor played a tremendous role in influencing designers and home keepers to aspire for this kind of ambiance in their homes. Local governments caught the fever and became more aware of urban planning and aesthetics began installing metal benches in public, recreational areas.

In the 20th century, wrought iron was the most utilized material for the construction of the metal bench mostly for a domestic setting. In the absence of superior technology, the malleability of wrought iron was a better choice then. The advent of design and metalwork technology revolutionized the material of choice into steel, which is a much classier and more durable metal. In the late 20th century, carefully crafted steel park benches become so popular in the western world.

Contemporary metalwork is quite different. The metal furniture designs have transformed drastically from the conservative, typical chairs and tables. The metal bench designs have equally evolved from plain, stiff backs to more modern, comfortable seats that are desirable to seat on. Accessories such as head, arm, and leg rests can be customized into the bench to suit the needs of a person. Designers who can show case fantastically contorted metal furniture are most sorts after today by home keepers, architects, and urban developers.

The 5 Basic Elements of Green Architecture

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Sustainable architecture is the practice of designing buildings while taking into consideration sustainable development and environmental growth. It aims to minimize environmental impact of buildings through moderation in the utilization of energy and development space as well as building materials. To be able to strongly promote the practice, there are some basic elements to keep in mind:

Small space

More often than not, large houses consume a tremendous amount of energy. Aside from that, they also need a lot of building materials. To minimize wastefulness, smaller houses are now preferred as these facilitates energy conservation and reduces depletion of natural resources.

Solar energy

A solar-heated house makes it very comfortable to live in. A well-built passive solar energy should be able to provide enough sunlight into the rooms.

Water conservation

In making green buildings or green homes, the use of low water should be highly taken into consideration. Toilets, shower heads, faucet aerators and flow restrictors should be carefully chosen. Others even use drought-tolerant plants in order to minimize water usage.

Renewable energy

A good way to produce electricity while conserving fossil fuel is by making use of the natural powers of the wind, water and the sun.

Natural and local materials

Nature provides us a wide range of materials which we can use to make homes and buildings - mud plasters, lime, glass, bricks, tiles, bamboo, grasses, paper, reeds and natural fibers. Using local materials for construction minimizes transporting costs and hassles. You may also use plants to enhance natural ambiance in your living space. Aside from the ambiance, plants also release oxygen into the air.

These are some of the basic elements of green architecture. Considering green homes and green buildings will not only help you save the environment, it will also help you save on costs, in the long run. Thank you for taking the time to inform yourself about how to build a greener home.

If you want to find out more information on green architecture, then Wikipedia's Green Building page, or visit a list of typical elements of green architecture. Alternatively, visit ADPSR. an architectural organization dedicated to ecological and sustainable practices for the built environment.

'Inception' Trailer 2 HD.mp4

An idea is more than a thought. It's a virus, a cancer of sorts, that can spread until it completely takes over a person, until it defines the person. A single idea from the human mind can build cities. An idea can transform the world and rewrite all the rules. -- Inception as an individual embedded in the field of architecture, the wake of the movie Inception certainly does provoke my thought. I think the writing of this piece comes in a good time where everybody have seen the movie; if not don't read this onwards. though I'm not going to recite the plot, I'm going to relate how Inception is deeply rooted with architecture, not in obvious sense -- but in a much more thought-provoking manner. It all began with architecture. "Whether it's through the manipulation of structures to show the power of the dreamers, as in the folding streets of Paris, or in the crumbling towers of Limbo, which symbolize the advancing collapse of Cobb's mental state [played by Leonardo DiCaprio], the design of the built environment is always significant," explains Paul Franklin, the overall visual effects supervisor, who collaborated with Dneg's Pete Bebb, the CG supervisor, and Andy Lockley, the 2D supervisor, among others. -- Bill Desowitz Greek labyrinth and Inception Christopher Nolan certainly have put forward of how architecture have shaped our surrounding environment; and where architect's drawings of mazes (plans in architectural term) -- resulting in us being inside the maze, finding ...
