Turks Pray In Ancient Armenian Cathedral

Hundreds of Turkish nationalists have performed Muslim prayers in one of the most important historical Armenian churches in a high-profile ceremony authorized by Turkey's government, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reports. The political action, organized by the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), followed the reported restoration of a cross atop another medieval Armenian church located in eastern Turkey. The 10th-century church of the Holy Cross on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van saw its first religious service in nearly a century less than two weeks ago. On October 1, Turkish television images showed MHP leader Devlet Bahceli leading several hundred supporters to the 11th-century Holy Virgin Cathedral at the ruins of Ani, the capital of a medieval Armenian kingdom. It is located in Turkey's northeastern Kars region, less than one kilometer away from modern-day Armenia. The crowd entered the once-thriving city through its well-preserved main gate and marched to the cathedral as an Ottoman-style Janissary brass band accompanied it. Participants carried Turkish flags and chanted "God is great" during the procession. Bahceli and senior MHP figures from across Turkey knelt and pressed their foreheads to the ground in the ensuing Friday prayer led by a Sunni Muslim cleric. The latter could be seen addressing the MHP flock from a makeshift podium erected inside the structure. Built by an Armenian royal dynasty in 1001, the cathedral has for centuries been regarded as a ...

The Origin of Plantation Shutters

greek architecture

When choosing new shutters as part of a home repair project you may be deciding whether looks or practicality are more important features for your home. You can stop worrying, because with plantation shutters you can have the very best of both. Plantation shutters can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece. They were used both internally and externally in Greek architecture to provide a degree of both privacy and safety. Influences of Greek building styles, such as plantation shutters, can be seen throughout the western world.

Before it became commonplace to glaze windows, shutters were used instead to protect the interior of buildings from the elements and from intruders. They would be opened during the day for increased ventilation and to allow light into the property.

Greek influences were common in architecture in America throughout the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This is particularly evident in public buildings such as libraries, and government buildings. These influences were also evident in the great plantation mansions stretching from South Carolina to Mississippi. Plantation owners wanted the same combination of beauty and privacy that the Greeks had valued; they also saw the aesthetic benefits of this style of shutter. They were also interested in security, as these plantation areas were isolated and not well populated. Plantation mansions were often targeted by robbers due to their locations association with wealth and prosperity.

Now you understand a little about the origin of plantation shutters, you might be interested to learn how to choose the appropriate shutters for your property.

Ask the opinion of a carpenter if you are not sure whether your existing window structure will support the extra weight of hinged shutter panels. If you need to replace the framework of the window, the project could cost more than you anticipated. Also note that if you live in an area prone to hurricanes, plantation shutters may not provide the necessary level of protection and you should consider hurricane shutters.

Decide on the width of louver you require before you buy shutter panels. As well as the appearance, the louver size has an impact on the shutter's functionality. The wider the louver, the greater the airflow into the room and the more light you will be able to let in.

You will need to consider which material you prefer for your shutters. Although wooden shutters are the traditional choice and can produce a cozier effect, they may not be suitable for humid climates or rooms where they are likely to come into contact with water and steam. For these locations you may decide to choose vinyl, which is also cheaper and easier to maintain than wood.

Your final decision is whether you need fixed or adjustable slats. Depending on the function of your shutters, moveable slats may not be necessary, for example if you are planning on having them open all day and only closing them at night. If you want the shutters closed during the day, adjustable slats are great for letting in air and some light.

Now you just need to find a quality supplier of plantation blinds, and reliable contractor, unless you intend to fit the shutters yourself. If you are, ensure you get good advice from your home store, or various online sources before you begin the task.

Being very excited about home repair and storm protection, John C. Bakers has been editing various news in this specific field. You can see his publications on plantation shutters over at http://www.shades-blinds-shutters-guide.com/plantation-shutters.html and different sources for plantation shutters knowledge.

Themes in Bedroom Decoration

greek architecture

There are many different ways to be implemented into the interior designing of your room. The more options you have the more difficult it gets to make a choice. This is the basis of the confusion you have. What you need most of all is clarity and a sense of organization.

So let's begin the most important aspect where to start. Make sure you first enlist all the requirements in your room basing on the usage. Many people make the common mistake of installing features based on the visual appeal but these features can hamper the functionality of the house. This will in turn make sure that you do not repent later on missing something important. Once you have done with it proceed forward to decide what actually you want your room to look like. Do you have any preferences in this respect?

Yes, I am talking about the theme like Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Gothic, Oriental, Modern theme and many more. All is not scrap. They are well explained below to make sure you decide what you want.

o Egyptian theme:

The "Egyptian theme" word itself indicates that it's in Egyptian trend basis. The famous object for this that comes to mind is magnificent pyramid interior. That's what! The golden colour is more predominant. You can proceed for implementing the Egyptian writings and images.

o Greek and Roman theme:

It entirely depends on what you prefer. Greek trend of interior design was remarkably improved by Romans by incorporating more architecture into it. Both are similar to some extent. Make sure you have enough space if you wish to go for this theme because its mostly both of them use columns. So you will need more space for this. Lack of space can be a serious flaw if you are interested in a Greek and Roman theme.

o Gothic:

If you are crazy about colours like black, gargoyles etc... and want to give the impact of such colours to your room, then this theme best for you.

o Oriental and Modern:

If you are impressed with Japanese trend of interior designing, then these themes work best for you. These follow Japanese touch of interior designing. However, oriental can give you a chance to implement Asian trends into it.

The above enlisted themes are just to make clear the numerous possibilities of interior decoration of your room in a creative manner. There are a lot such creative stuff that you may for. Go ahead what are you waiting for? Good luck...

East Architects revolutionized the West-Life - 1/6

An architect is trained and licensed in planning and designing buildings, and participates in supervising the construction of a building. Etymologically, architect derives from the Latin architectus, itself derived from the Greek arkhitekton (arkhi-, chief + tekton, builder), ie chief builder. [2] A looser usage of Architect is: the translator of the building user's requirements of and from a building into an inhabitable environment. Moreover, the words architect and architecture are used in the disciplines of engineering, eg computer software architect; however, in some of the world's jurisdictions, the professional and commercial uses of these etymologic variants, are legally protected from such loose denotations. Professionally, an architect's decisions affect public safety, and thus must undergo specialized training and education, and a practicum for practical experience in order to qualify for and earn a licence to practice architecture; the practical, technical, and academic requirements for being a licenced architect vary (see below). Architects in practice Architecture is a business in which technical knowledge, management, and an understanding of business are as important as design. An architect accepts a commission from a client. The commission might involve preparing feasibility reports, building audits, the design of a building or of several buildings, structures, and the spaces among them. The architect participates in developing the requirements the client ...

Greece - History Meets Modern Life

greek architecture

Greece is quickly making itself known as a need-to-visit tour site. With its excellent all-season climate, beautiful landscapes, and great tourist spots, visiting Greece is truly a no-brainer. In ancient times, it was the center of modern democracy, culture, and the arts, and it retains this high status even today. Being a city of both ancient influences and modern conveniences, Greece is sure to have something in it for everyone.

If you're the kind of person that likes to relax and just experience nature, the warm Mediterranean country offers thousands of miles of beaches to explore. The soothing turquoise waters and long stretches of white sand create ideal places to just lie back and enjoy yourself. Secluded coves surrounded by gigantic cliffs and palm and pine tree forests abound in Greece, and one should definitely see the country's beautiful seashore in their lifetime, it's an experience you can't forget.

If sight-seeing is more of your thing, no worries: Greece has lots to offer. Towering monuments to ancient Greek gods like Zeus and Athena still stand tall, a testament to the great architectural prowess of the early Grecians. The sophisticated structures of famous buildings like the monumental Acropolis and Temple of Poseidon are truly beautiful sights to behold. Intricate columns and carefully crafted sculptures also flourish. Many modern cities like Washington D.C. borrow the concepts first put into use by the Greeks and their Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian columns are still major inspirations in current architecture.

Greece is also a country of wonderfully rich culture, stemming from the fact that it was the center of sophistication in the ancient world. Traditions, language, music, foods, and wine are all major parts of the Greek culture and leave a lasting impression on all tourists that visit it. Visitors can listen to traditional Greek folk music, Dimotiko Tragoudi, which originated in the early 9th century while partaking in the rich cuisine of the country. Known for its high-quality products and amazing, rich taste, Greek food is some of the best in the world. Unique herbs and spices dot traditional dishes like paidaka, tender and juicy lamb ribs, and pastitsio, a dish reminiscent of Italian lasagna. The hearty Greek diet is also accompanied by some of the best wines, many locally produced in family-owned vineries.

In short, Greece has much to offer to prospective travelers. Stunning beaches, towering monuments, advanced culture, and delicious dining are just some of the many attractions of the country. The tour industry in Greece is becoming more and more advanced and accessible to the average person, as opposed to when only high-class citizens could travel there just decades ago. This is yet another reason to observe the wonders of the country. Online all-in-one booking sites make traveling there even easier. Whatever your reasons are, visiting Greece is a remarkable experience that will go above and beyond your expectations.

Luxury Front Line Villa, Moraira, Costa Blanca - LV-2762

www.luxuryspanishvillas.net ** CLICK FOR CURRENT PRICE & MORE PHOTOS ** This classically beautiful front line villa in Moraira, well-nigh grandiose, yet almost Greek in its solemnity, of impressive proportions and noble in appearance, is surrounded by magnificent exterior areas, such as a marvellous pool with Roman steps, sun-terraces, framed by pillars, royal palm trees of king-sized dimensions and an illustrious sea view. The imposing architecture is like a timeless painting, the exceptional build-quality inestimable, the superior decor a true feast for the eyes. Indeed, the property is a very fine example of a luxury new Spanish property. The bright rooms are full of extraordinary objects of value, such as a full-sized depiction of Leonardo's "The Last Supper" in delicate shades, the mysterious relics of a shipwreck and a grand chandelier. A palatial reception room with hand-cut terracotta tiles and a wrought-iron, suspended fireplace, as well as a princely gallery and extensive window facades, not to mention a country house kitchen, both modern and comfortable in equal measure, bear witness to the superb tradition of the past, together with the comfortable practicalities of the present, in masterful unison and separately accentuated. The location is secluded and sheltered, yet extremely close to the hustle and bustle of the idyllic coastal towns where you will be hard pressed to find a more luxurious front-line Moraira property.
